Mexican author Laura Esquivel cooks up a delightful romance with wit and elements of magical realism in this international bestseller novel. The twelve chapters of the novel, one for each month of the year, start with a recipe in the tradition of 19th century ladies' home journals that featured romances and home remedies. Esquivel's humorous twist on the 19th century genre is about upholding family traditions and breaking them, as the title of the novel, Like Water for Chocolate, alludes to the Spanish expression that means one's emotions have reached a boiling point.
