Nikos Kazantzakis's Zorba the Greek written in 1946, translated in 36 languages and adapted for the big screen in 1964 staring Anthony Queen, tells the story of a young intellectual who ventures to escape his bookish life with the help of the boisterous and mysterious Alexi Zorba. The novel has been considered a classic with its many philosophical questions about the meaning of life, the colorful and memorable character of Alexi Zorba, and its life affirming message.
