In the Middle East, the oud (a fretless pear-shaped lute with 11 strings) is known as the "king of instruments." Cleveland native Danny Lahood was inspired to learn this instrument by his father, an immigrant from Sebhel, a village in the Zgharta District of North Lebanon. Over the past 40 years he has given well-received performances across the U.S. and Canada, and his skills are in constant demand in Cleveland's Arabic community.
The program will include classical, folk, and modern music from Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria, with several songs by the late, great Farid al-Atrash, nicknamed "King of the Oud"). Lahood, who also plays the derbake (goblet drum), will accompany himself with traditional percussion sounds produced by an electronic keyboard.
Going along with the evening's theme, a selection of delicious Lebanese foods, provided by Sanabel Middle East Bakery of Akron, will be served at no extra charge.
