Family & Community Services is sponsoring weekly vegetable giveaways at two Community Garden Project sites in Portage County. Every Wednesday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm at The King-Kennedy Community Center in Ravenna (6660 Garfield Rd.) and from 12pm to 1pm at The Freedom House in Kent (1213 Anita Dr.) there will be free local, organic produce available to those in need. For those who are able, donations are welcome so that the Community Garden Project can continue next year. Produce is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The mission of the Community Garden Project is to bring fresh, organic, locally-grown produce to those who might otherwise not have access to it. It also helps youth develop leadership skills within their communities. Garden sites have been cultivated and maintained by Freedom House volunteers and veterans, Youth Development Program teens and young adults, Arts Alive! program youth, PowerCorps members, Kent State University and Baldwin-Wallace College students, and community volunteers.
