The Portage Public Transportation Assistance Foundation, Inc. (PPTAFI), a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation, was formed by PARTA in late 2006 to help expand transportation to those who can least afford it, including seniors living on fixed incomes, disabled persons and low-income families.
v While some programs exist to help defray the costs of this transportation, there are many needs that are not supported by any local agency. For example, a small portion of the cost of transporting a senior to a doctor’s appointment is reimbursed by a local agency. However, the cost of transporting that same senior to the grocery store is not reimbursed by anyone. Many seniors are on their own when it comes to paying for transportation.
v The same is true for low-income families. Some local agencies assist their client families get where they need to go by
purchasing PARTA bus and transit tokens. These agencies are limited in what they can afford to purchase.
The number of people who need this same help dwarfs to the number of those who receive it.
